AI&U&UU
This page is dedicated to the exploration of AI and how it affects us as individuals and as a spiritual institution. It is an outcome of a lay-led service presented on 2/18/24 entitled AI&U&UU. Here is a ***link to that service***. Note that this link takes you to an edited version of the service, and NOT the one in the MUUF Sunday Services Playlist. The service is there too, of course, but this version has some dead-time cut out, and also has title clips and chapters inserted. This makes it easier to watch and navigate, especially for people who are not familiar with our services. If you want to share this service with anyone, please copy and send them this URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13h_h6oMzq0
Discussion Group
During the 2/18/24 service we announced that we are hoping to start a monthly discussion group, to talk about all things AI. Organizational meetings of the group were held in February and March via Zoom, among people who were involved in the creation of the service. Here are a few points that emerged from those meetings
- The meetings should be held monthly. We will try to have two times available, one evening and one daytime. We will alternate between the two. Initially we are looking at Wednesdays at 8:00PM and 4:00PM alternating. We don’t know which Wednesday of the month yet. This is very much subject to change.
- Each meeting should have some kind of a topic to kick off discussion. We don’t want to be too rigid about straying from the topic, but if it looks like the discussion has gone far afield, then the host should nudge the discussion back on track. Ideally there will be a variety of hosts. The topic should be suggested well in advance and possibly materials should be distributed in advance.
- We want to keep the attendees within UU but not necessarily within MUUF. Folks should be encouraged to invite anyone to join in who is a member of another UU congregation.
- The link to the service above should be shared within UU. For example, we have contacted the Church of the Larger Fellowship to potentially offer it to them, as a resource for congregations which don’t have ministers, and might welcome some pre-recorded content.
- The service will also be recommended to visitors as an example of a lay-led service, something that distinguishes MUUF as a spiritual community. See https://muuf.org/welcome_visitors/
The kickoff meeting(s) will be 4:00PM and 8:00PM on Wednesday 4/3. We will have two meetings that day to see who shows up, to gauge interest.

Here is a website called AI and the Human which has a number of essays about AI from a UU perspective.
Here is a link to a conversation with Yuval Noah Harari (historian, author of Sapiens, and a mesmerizing speaker). It’s a far-ranging interview but there is a segment about AI which begins at 10:15
This section is sure to grow. Please bring your suggestions to meetings of the AI&U&UU Discussion Group.
