As Unitarian Universalists, we believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person—and that includes the right to read, learn, and explore diverse perspectives. Our library’s banned books collection is a powerful reflection of our commitment to intellectual freedom and social justice.
This collection is more than just shelves of books. It’s a sanctuary of voices that have been silenced, stories that challenge the status quo, and narratives that expand our understanding of human experience. We’re called to be stewards of these important works, ensuring that marginalized stories find their way to readers who need them most.

We invite our congregation to:
- Donate banned books for our collection
- Bring forward books that have been challenged, especially those representing LGBTQ+ experiences, racial justice, and diverse cultural narratives
- Share personal reflections on how banned books have shaped your understanding of the world
- Help us create thoughtful displays that contextualize the ongoing struggle for intellectual freedom
In the spirit of our UU principles—particularly our commitment to the free and responsible search for truth and meaning—we’re building a collection that honors complexity, challenges assumptions, and celebrates human diversity. Speak with Nick Wallwork for information about how you can contribute.
Stop by the library after Sunday service. Together, we can continue to be a beacon of hope, understanding, and radical inclusivity.
Because every silenced voice deserves to be heard.
