The Unitarian Universalist Association
Information and Links
The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA) was formed in 1961 through the consolidation of the Universalist Church of America and the American Unitarian Association. Today the UUA is a faith community of more than 1000 congregations that support each other and bring to the world a vision of religious freedom, tolerance and social justice.
Our congregations elect a Board of Trustees to govern the Association in accordance with our commitment to the democratic process. Our Association supports the ongoing vision, mission and ministry of member congregations. Annually, we hold a meeting of the entire Association, called General Assembly, where delegates representing their congregations vote on Association issues.
MUF is a member of the New York Metropolitan District, within the UUA.
The Chalice Lighters Program
Chalice Lighters is a program sponsored by the New York Metropolitan District’s Growth and Extension Committee (G&E) to help congregations achieve growth potential. Twice each year, in the fall and again in the spring, individuals in congregations are asked to contribute at least $10.
Every Chalice Lighters dollar goes to the congregation selected by the G&E Committee to help that congregation take a significant step: to initiate a congregation, to secure professional religious leadership, to secure or improve a building, or to forward the development of a growth plan.
Part of the philosophy of Chalice Lighters is to help congregations think outside the boundaries of their immediate faith communities toward a more global vision of Unitarian Universalism. Part of this larger vision is congregations helping congregations.
